What's in your fridge?

I've just been watching Anderson Cooper's talk show about how to change your eating habits in a healthier direction. It was pretty good, he had a dietician with some good ideas and the best one was rearranging your fridge. She suggested putting the fruits and vegetables (I hate the word "veggies", don't ask me why) on the top two shelves of the fridge and putting condiments such as dressings, mayo, etc in the vegetable bin. The beer and soft drinks should be in the meat bin (don't ask me where the meat goes, she didn't mention it and that would be a problem for me because I almost always have bacon and Italian sausage in there.). The point is to have the healthy products where they can be easily seen and accessed and the fattening stuff hidden in the bins where the lettuce usually disintegrates into mush (in my house). It makes sense.

Now, I don't consider myself a big junk food eater, in fact, I think I eat healthier than the average American. I don't eat fast food - can't even remember the last time I did but it was probably in 2009 when I still worked a 9-5 job. I don't keep a lot of snacks around (don't have kids). The snacks I do have are ice cream - but I only eat Triple Chocolate Stampede and it's not always available at Rouses, where I shop, so any other flavor doesn't really tempt me. It's for the hubs.  I usually have peanut butter cups ( I might eat anywhere from 1-3 a day or I might not eat any on a given day) and I usually have Fritos which often go stale before they're all eaten. From time to time I might have other snacks around but those are the main ones. I never have cokes or anything carbonated which can be a problem when people stop by and all I have to offer is water, tea or coffee. I (or my hubs) cooks every night. We have a meat, a vegetable and a starch (usually rice). Sometimes I make cornbread but that's the only bread we really eat. We often cook breakfast - eggs, bacon or sausage, grits or potatoes, sometimes biscuits. If we eat a big breakfast like that we usually don't eat lunch. If we skip breakfast, we eat lunch - usually left-overs from the night before. I don't eat as much fresh fruit as I should and I don't know why because I do like fruit. Love cheese, always have at least two kinds of cheese in the fridge.

I don't really have any food addictions except maybe for coffee. I probably drink more than I should - right now I'm drinking a cup and it's 3:30 in the afternoon. I should have eaten one of the apples that are sitting in a bowl on the kitchen table. They've been there since Thanksgiving. Yikes.

Anyway, the show got me thinking about food and the role it plays in my life and I realized I have a pretty healthy lifestyle. I'm in my 50's and I have no health issues at all. No diabetes, no high blood pressure, no high cholesterol. I weigh a bit more than I should but not enough to really bother me. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind being a size 6 again but a size 10 ain't too shabby and I'm just not into deprivation for vanity's sake any more.

Speaking of food, if you don't read David Lebovitz you really should. Today's post is especially enjoyable. Sometimes reading about food written by an extremely skilled wordsmith accompanied by beautiful photography is all you need to satisfy that oral fix.
But not always. (She says as she reaches for the second PB cup.)

By any chance, did they deal with the problem that I'm having? Since I quit smoking in December, nothing tastes good any more. Everything leaves a bitter aftertaste - except pastries, ice cream, and candy. So I find myself loading up on those, which is not so good an idea. I've even caught myself sneaking down to the kitchen in the dark hours before dawn, pouring myself a cup of sugar and spooning it down. I'm turning into a secret sugar whore! God, I don't want to end up dumpster-diving for donuts!

No,that wasn't mentioned. I didn't have a problem with an after taste when I quit smoking, in fact everything tasted better than when I smoked. I guess everyone is different.
But I craved sweets too - I hear that's common. It went away after a while, though. Hang in there,

This made me smile. Maybe because I thought of all the different peeps that eat at my house.

Husband eats fresh fruits and veggies in lunch. Son and daughter that still live at home feed their muscles (eggs, chicken, cereal).

And grandbabes. (Vanilla wafers, Cheezits, Mini Wheats).

And me. Coffee. Oranges. Steak. Russell Stover chocolates.

Size 10? Not too shabby at all. That's the size of an average high school girl.
